STUCK how to Free your Mind when Everything Seems Stuck

How Free are You?

When I was a teenager, a doctor told me that I would slowly become deaf and blind. By my forties, I would be trapped in my own body, unable to hear or see the world outside.

Since then, I have been searching for freedom. And over the years I discovered: it’s not walls that hold you back, or physical disabilities. It’s the stories in your head.

In STUCK I take you along on my quest, through special conversations, sharp insights, amazing experts, truffle ceremonies, cognitive behavioral therapy, Buddhist wisdom, all kinds of challenges where I learn to let go of judgment and an unexpectedly intense encounter via Marktplaats.
This is a book about feeling, grieving, changing and choosing again. About the patterns that hold you back, the freedom you feel when you stop fighting and the richness of a life that doesn’t have to be perfect, but does have to be authentic. With theories you understand, stories that touch you and tools you can apply too.
I wrote this book for you. Because whether it’s in a body, a system or a belief: we all get STUCK sometimes.

not Hearing not Seeing not Staying Silent

When your World Becomes Dark and Silent, Do You Become that Too?

When Joyce is seventeen, a doctor tells her that she will not be of value to society. He suggests she should learn a language. “Then maybe you can translate a book someday.” That’s all there is for her, is his message.

No Longer Seeing or Hearing

Joyce knows at that moment that she suffers from the very rare Usher syndrome, which causes her hearing and vision to deteriorate progressively and will leave her deaf and blind around her forties. The diagnosis makes her feel rushed: she wants to see everything, do everything, learn everything, experience everything before her world becomes permanently dark and silent. She is in constant battle with her illness, desperately searching for a way to be happy with it, until she realizes that this is a fight she can never win. Then she begins to become convinced that she has something to tell the world. The fact that she will soon no longer be able to hear or see doesn’t have to mean that she will also stay silent.

The proceeds from Not Hearing Not Seeing Not Silent go to Usher Syndrome Foundation.

The Lame Leads the Blind

“a Hilarious Encouragement for Everyone in Times of Crisis”

This is a story about Niek and Joyce.
Niek has a spinal cord injury and Joyce suffers from Usher syndrome, which slowly makes her deaf and blind. These aren’t pleasant things of course, but these two can live with them. And how: as inspiring speakers they literally pack full auditoriums.

Until it Falls Silent for these Inspiring Speakers

Then the world faces the coronavirus, which makes gatherings impossible overnight. Niek and Joyce are devastated. Or rather: stuck in a walk-in closet and at the kitchen table. Their work as inspiring speakers is gone, their health is threatened, all the news is bad and hugging is no longer allowed either. Niek retreats under his blanket and Joyce reaches for the chocolate.

But after a while they can no longer suppress their innate optimism. So they search for new ways to make themselves useful and tell their story. This goes with trial and error. Niek tries singing for a while (not a good idea) and Joyce tries DIY projects (also not so good). But their search eventually leads somewhere and provides plenty of insights along the way. And this little book: a hilarious encouragement for everyone in times of crisis. #sterkercoronadoor
