After the diagnosis of Usher syndrome at age 16, Joyce held onto the thought for years that when the moment came that she would be deaf and blind, she would only be a burden to the people around her and completely no longer of value to society. That’s literally what a doctor said to her at the time. “You’re not going to be of value to society.”

But what does being “of value” actually mean? Quite a difficult term. If you’re not of value. Joyce has discovered that she is absolutely of value. That you with your story are of value. And that together we can add much more value, in our daily lives but also in the workplace. This is where the topic of diversity and inclusion fits perfectly.

What is Diversity and Inclusion Actually?

Diversity is about the variety of people. The differences. And that diversity can be anything: it can be “people with distance from the labor market,” people with a physical or mental disability, but also other convictions through faith, gender, skin color, sexual orientation, age… Everything that differs from the other is actually diversity.

Inclusion is about the choice to see the value of those differences and to utilize them. It’s an attitude, mentality and mindset.
